COVID-19-related state hospitalizations have gone up in recent days, which is not good news.
But for our region, specifically, our area's hospitals are not seeing the same increase in hospitalized cases that the rest of the state is.
State hospitalizations are up lately with some regions seeing uptick in hospitalized cases in recent days.
But we're one of the few exceptions to that rule in Louisiana.
In our region, we're seeing an influx of new cases, yes, but hospitalizations are not increasing.
In Region 3 (which encompasses Lafourche, Terrebonne, St. Mary, Assumption, St. Charles, St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes) there are currently 11 people hospitalized with COVID-19 ailments and 2 patients are on ventilators because of COVID-19. At the peak of the pandemic, there were 132 patients in our region hospitalized with COVID-19.
Our numbers are actually DOWN from where they were a few weeks ago - bucking the trends from around the state.
On June 13, we had 10 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 ailments in Region 3, a new pandemic low. But in the days that followed, we grew hospitalizations to 16 on June 16th.
Since that time, there's been a downward trend and hospitalizations are back down to 11 again, near the low-point for the entire pandemic.
The fear of running out of ventilators is virtually a non-issue at this time. There are 2 patients on ventilators in our region to treat COVID-19, part of the 12 total ventilators in use for our region. That means that 10 other ventilators are in use to treat non-COVID-19 ailments.
There are more than 100 ventilators in stock, and our COVID-19-related ventilator use has been steady with 2-3 in use for the past month with no drastic rise or fall. On June 19, we did have a mark of prominence with 0 patients using ventilators for COVID-19, but in the days that have followed, the number has risen back and 2 COVID-19 patients are using the machines.
We've been asked a lot about these numbers, so here they are - for our area (Region 3) and also for the entire state.
