A testing backlog resulted in the state of Louisiana adding a large number of COVID cases to state total's today, but many of the new cases posted were several weeks old.
The state added 4,814 new COVID cases today, bringing Louisiana's total COVID case count to 207,039 since the start of the pandemic. The state also processed 101,452 new COVID tests in the new numbers.
But the state says that 2,538 of today's cases coming out of 69,125 processed tests were old, backlogged cases due to a processing error the state had with labs reporting results electronically.
Outside of the backlog, today's new data that is more current with 2,276 new COVID cases and 32,327 processed tests, which would leave Louisiana today with a 7.0% positive rate.
The state reports 34 new COVID deaths today, bringing Louisiana's total deaths to 5,985 from the start of the pandemic in March.
For Lafourche, there were 19 new COVID cases - even with the backlog, bringing the parish to 4,175 total COVID cases from the pandemic's inception.
The parish's % positive today is 2.7% with 19 new cases and 680 processed tests. The parish has continued to show positivity rates below state and national averages in recent weeks with the worst COVID situations being clustered right now in northern Louisiana.
The state's hospitalizations continue to rise.
The state reports 972 COVID hospitalizations today, up from 929 yesterday. COVID patients on ventilators today is also up from 88 yesterday to 101 today.
Our area's hospitalizations situation got worse in the past 24 hours, as well.
Our COVID hospitalized patients rose from 27 to 32 in the past 24 hours in Region 3, and our COVID patients on ventilators rose from 1 to 4 in the new numbers.
