Lafourche Parish District Attorney Kristine Russell has a message for looters: If you're caught, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
DA Russell met with her entire staff in preparation for their re-opening of the Thibodaux office to the public following Hurricane Ida.
In the meeting, DA Russell told her staff to not allow looters to get away with their crimes. If guilty, they will pay the price.
“If there is sufficient evidence of someone looting, burglarizing, or attempting to do such things during hurricane Ida or the aftermath, prosecute them - do not reduce the charges," DA Russell told her staff. "Allow the facts of each case to reveal to us those who took advantage of the people in our parish at our most vulnerable time. The things I have heard are appalling, and we will not let them get away with it.”
Since Ida, Lafourche has reported several arrests for looting.
Sheriff Craig Webre has said multiple times since the storm that Lafourche law enforcement "will not tolerate" such behavior – a sentiment that Russell said she backs, as well.
