Nineteen illegal immigrants were arrested on the grounds of a local shipyard this week, as part of an ongoing investigation conducted by federal agents.

Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport was searched this week as part of a criminal investigation, according to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 

In the search agents arrested 19 illegal immigrants on the business's grounds.

In the Nola.com story, it was reported that five of the workers were placed in ICE detention and the other 14 were processed and released after being placed into deportation proceedings in federal immigration court 

Several readers called The Gazette offices earlier this week, alarmed by a large police presence at the local shipyard. 

The investigation was related to immigration, but it is not yet confirmed that the workers were employees of the shipyard. 

Bollinger is a well-known local shipyard with decades of history as an economic leader in our area. In recent years, Bollinger has secured contracts with the United States Coast Guard, producing hundreds of ships for the military.
