The National Hurricane Center has identified the southern Gulf of Mexico as a possible area for tropical development early next week.
The NHC says an area in the extreme southern Gulf has a 20% chance for tropical development in the next 5 days as a trough of low pressure is expected to form.
The low pressure, NHC says, could develop tropically if it moves northward and stays over the Gulf's waters. Long-range computer models have been showing possible development of a tropical system for several days with landfall middle-to-late next week. Landfall for those anticipated systems have been all over the Gulf, and some models do not predict development at all.
