A 51-year-old Lafayette native was killed in a 2-vehicle crash this morning on U.S. Highway 90 near Louisiana Highway 24.

Louisiana State Police Troop C said investigators learned that Paul Chevalier, 51, of Lafayette, was driving a 2007 Dodge Charger eastbound in the westbound lanes of US. Highway 90. For reasons still under investigation, the Dodge struck a westbound Ford pickup head-on in the left lane of U.S. Highway 90.

Chevalier was properly restrained, but suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Ford were also properly restrained. The Ford's driver has severe injuries and the passenger has minor injuries.

A toxicology sample was collected from both drivers and was submitted for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation. Troop C has investigated 38 fatal crashes resulting in 48 deaths in 2021.

This past week has been especially bad with multiple crashes with fatality in the past 72 hours.
