A Houma native was supposed to fight on national TV tomorrow night on ESPN.
But that bout is now off the card because both the local fighter and his trainer have tested positive for COVID-19.
Houma native Rance Ward arrived in Las Vegas a few days ago ahead of his scheduled bout with Fred Wilson Jr., one fight on the undercard of a show headlined by a prized fight between Alex Saucedo and Sonny Fredrickson.
To be eligible to compete on the show, all fighters must pass a COVID-19 test, and Ward's test came back positive, as did the test of his trainer.
The bout with Wilson is now canceled and Ward is in quarantine in Las Vegas.
The local fighter confirmed the positive test today, also confirming that the bout is now off.
Ward is 4-1-1, and this bout against Wilson Jr. (6-0-2) would have been a chance to showcase his talents before a national audience.
Fight promoter Carl Moretti, of Top Rank, said that COVID-19 is a terrible pandemic and that the virus "isn't going away any time soon."
