Several of Nicholls' biggest conference rivals will be soon be playing their last seasons in the Southland Conference.
Officials with the WAC are expected to announce tomorrow that they are forming an FCS league, which is expected to begin playing in 2022.
In the new league are several Southland Conference schools: Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin - a move that is, undoubtedly going to change the shape and future of the Southland going forward.
If this move takes shape as it's being reported, the Southland will have at least six, but maybe seven football playing schools going forward, which could prompt the league to look into expansion.
Central Arkansas has been widely reported to be flirting with the Atlantic Sun in their expansion efforts. No official move has been confirmed, but they, too, could be on the way out of the league.
If UCA leaves, that would leave Nicholls, Houston Baptist, McNeese, Northwestern State, Southeastern and Incarnate Word as the only football playing members of the Southland Conference.
In other sports, the league also features UNO and Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
