The Central Lafourche baseball team isn't going to the Class 5A State Playoffs.
But by playing the spoiler, they sure made it much more difficult for their parish rivals to get there, as well.
The Trojans beat Thibodaux 8-7 on Wednesday, the second game of the two-game series between the rivals. The Tigers won game 1 15-3 on Monday.
The victory improves Central Lafourche to 5-23 on the season. In defeat, Thibodaux fell to 18-9.
The Trojans successfully served as the spoiler for two of Thibodaux's big goals: postseason and district title.
Thibodaux entered the game inside of the Top 32 in the Class 5A State Power Rankings, but they've now dropped outside to No. 33.
Wednesday's game all-but ended Thibodaux's shot at winning the district championship.
The Tigers entered the week with an opportunity to take the title, but after losses to H.L. Bourgeois and the Trojans, they are now 2 full games back of one-loss Hahnville. Thibodaux does play Hahnville twice later this week, so they could win both and complicate the standings. But if they sweep Hahnville, that would likely clinch the title for Destrehan, who is sitting with just 2 losses.
The Trojans are well outside of the Top 32 and are near the bottom of the district standings. But none of that math mattered to the young, pesky team on Wednesday when they were able to get timely hits and clutch pitching to seal the win.
Jacob Davis got the victory on the mound, throwing 3 innings and allowing 1 run.
The Trojans will play East St. John today, then Dunham Friday – both games at home – to close out their regular season.
Thibodaux plays Hahnville Thursday and Friday, then St. Charles on Saturday. The Tigers likely need to win one of those games to get into the playoffs.
